Please pray!

Dear Family,

Please join us in praying for the following family members:

Darlene Bodkins as she waits for insurance to approve a different chemo treatment.

Nancy Cramer is a patient in the Chambersburg Hospital.

Carol Davis is home and her heart is weak.

Connie Heberlig has an appointment tomorrow with an oncologist.

Pat Hockensmith is scheduled for surgery on August 8.  She is battling cancer.

Joyce Hornbaker sees the surgeon August 2 and probably will have a second surgery on August 7.

Thank you for uplifting these ladies in prayer.

“And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of His Spirit who lives in you.”  Romans 8:11

Do you have everything you need? SFCOG Updates for 7/30

Sunday is Coming, do you have everything you need?

Do you feel like you have everything you need?

Consider your packing list for a vacation trip, or a shopping list for the grocery store, or a list of items needed for your child’s “back to school” classroom needs—do you have what you need?

How about a trip to the Shippensburg Fair? What’s on your “Fair to-do-list”?  Here’s mine:

[ X ] See some animals

[ X ] Talk to some friends

[    ] Stop by the Scouts food stand

[ X ] Get some kettle corn

[ X ] Eat a funnel cake

[    ] Ride some rides

[ X ] Take a look at the arts & crafts exhibits

Did you do all you wanted to do? I missed a few things…

But do you have all you need to live a godly life? In the Bible, Peter writes in his second letter,

“Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.”

II Peter 1:2-3

The Bible says we have “everything we need for a godly life” because of Jesus. Faith in Jesus saves us—If we believe in Jesus, His Holy Spirit can help us to follow God’s rules and live a holy life. He can comfort us when we have hard times, and help us to be kind and loving. We will also be saved from sin and go to Heaven. All that comes just by believing in Jesus!

It seems very simple, but in order to live for Him day-to-day, it does take some effort to follow after him.  We already have all we need, but we do have to work at it as we live each day. As Peter writes,

“For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.

-II Peter 1:5-7

Living for Jesus is kind of like packing for a trip…

When you go on a trip, you might have a check list for all the things you need to take from your home to pack for your journey.

At home, you have everything you need, but when you go on vacation, it takes a little effort to load it all up and take it along. When we decide to live for God, we already have all we need, because of Jesus, but we do need to put some effort into our faith so that it can grow and be useful in our everyday lives. Faith is like a suitcase: it’s the starting point that we can load up with all of the other good things that God has given to us freely. But it takes some effort to pack. Peter says, “For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

So often we think of Faith and Works as competing ideas, but this Sunday, we will consider how they really are “Better Together” as we “make every effort to add to our faith” as we follow Jesus--He’s given us everything we need!

This week, we are looking forward to these ministry opportunities—

  • On Sunday we will welcome the children to join us in worship. Every time there is a 5th Sunday, our 11:00 children’s ministry is integrated into the sanctuary worship service. Children will worship with their parents, but they will be invited forward at the beginning of the sermon for a special children’s message. The nursery will still available, as well as ministry programs for age 2 to kindergarten.

  • Next Saturday, August 5, is the next Outreach hiking trip to the Abandoned Turnpike Tunnels. See the Gathering Place or your Sunday School classrooms for more information and to sign up. A group will meet at church parking lot at 9:00 am to carpool or caravan. Bring your friends & neighbors!

  • We will be hosting a Seminar for all Youth & Parents, ministry leaders who serve Children & Youth, and Anyone who would like to learn more about the Biblical View of Identity and how to care for people in a culture of confusion. This will be Sunday, August 13 beginning at 2:00 PM in the Sanctuary. There will be a similar session for youth during their Sunday School time that morning. More information was put in church mailboxes and has been distributed by our Youth Ministry to parents. Feel free to ask myself or Pastor Gary for more details.

  • On August 27th, we will include Child Dedication as part of our morning worship. If you would like to have any children in your family presented before the church as a part of this special prayer time, please reply to this email for more information, contact me at the office or on Sunday, or sign up in the Gathering Place.

Wherever the journeys of life take you this week, remember that you have “everything you need” through Jesus!

Celebrate with us!

Dear Family,

Wanted to share the good news!  Phil and Shayna Byers are proud parents of Seraphina Grace Byers, born July 24, weighing 8 lbs. 5 ozs. and is 21 in. long.  Seraphina joins big brother James and big sister Nicole.

Congratulations to grandparents, Sam and Kristin Byers!

Let us rejoice with them!

"Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring a reward from Him.  Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one's youth.  Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them.  They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court."  Psalm 127:3-5

Outreach Events - Correction and more info

Hello again, Church Family!

A few clarifications & corrections regarding some upcoming Outreach opportunities—

This weekend, you can invite your friends, family, & neighbors to Knoebels on Saturday (July 22). If you’d like to meet up with folks from our church, go to the Ferris Wheel at noon and look for the guy with the Big Green Hat! The park is free to enter and you can purchase tickets for rides.

The Rickett’s Glen Hike is actually this Sunday, not Saturday. You can consider attending worship at 8:30 and then caravanning to the park afterwards. Meet at Glens Lot Trailhead (420 PA-118, Sweet Valley, PA 17814) at noon and pack a picnic lunch. Look for the Big Green Hat! Please note, this is a difficult hike, and cell service is limited.

The Abandoned Turnpike Tunnel Hike is Saturday August 5th. The trailhead is in Breezewood, PA, but you can meet up at the church parking lot at 9:00am to travel together. This is a more level and moderate hike.

These events are designed as a fun way to invite your friends and family for shared time together while enjoying God’s Creation!

Happy Endings--SFCOG Updates for July 23

Sunday is Coming, and so is a Happy Ending!

Everyone is hoping for a happy ending! At the end of a summer day, we all love a beautiful sunset, or a campfire in the evening with friends and family, or a good book or a movie… But what do we do when we get to the end of the day and instead, we just feel exhausted or anxious?

What do we do when we find ourselves in the middle of an uncertain story that isn’t over yet? What do we do when our lives don’t go “according to plan?” How do we continue to be faithful and hold on to hope?

Given the persecution and struggle and changing plans that the Apostle Paul experienced in his own life, it may feel surprising to realize that one of the major themes that Paul was inspired to write about was Joy & Rejoicing. By my count, in all of his letters, he mentions the topic of Joy or Rejoicing 44 times. Compare this to sorrow, which he only mentions 12 times.

Out of these many passages where Paul talks about Joy, we will read from two of those this weekend (1 Thessalonians 5:16-28 - Rejoice always, pray continually…& Philippians 4:4-9 - Rejoice in the Lord always…). What we will see is that an attitude of Joy, rooted in prayer and thanksgiving, can also prepare us to engage an uncertain world with a gentle and steady Faith, as we follow Christ, the source of our Joy and Faith.

As the writer of Hebrews has said in Hebrews 12:2

“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

A few upcoming things to highlight this week:

  • Sunday evening is the Community Vespers service that begins the Annual Shippensburg Fair Week Festivities. Several Pastors from our community (including myself) will be taking part in this worship opportunity that brings together the whole family of God for this special occasion. The Vespers service begins at 7:30, but the Community Band will be sharing a concert of music beginning at 7:00.

  • Our Outreach team has been organizing a series of Summer Hikes. This Saturday, they will be meeting up at Ricketts Glen, and on August 5 there will be a trip to see the Abandoned Turnpike Tunnels. You can see the Gathering Place for more information, or feel free to reply to this email.

  • We will be hosting a Seminar for all Youth, Parents, and ministry volunteers who serve Children & Youth. It will focus on the Biblical View of Identity. This will be Sunday, August 13 beginning at 2:00 PM in the Sanctuary. There will be a similar session for youth during their Sunday School time that morning. More information has been put into church mailboxes and distributed by our Youth Ministry to parents.

  • On August 27th, we will include Child Dedication as part of our morning worship. If you would like to have any children in your family presented before the church as a part of this special time of prayer, please contact me for more information, or sign up in the Gathering Place.

Some Ministry Updates-

Our Youth Missions Team had a successful trip and a safe journey to and from Kentucky!

15 team members completed a construction project and conducted a Bible School in a community park. We will hear a report from them in a few weeks, but here are just a couple photos—

The Men’s Alliance ministry has been going strong all summer, with about 20 men each week coming together to challenge each other physically and spiritually! Feel free to join in every Saturday at 7:00 am at the American Legion in Shippensburg. Men of all backgrounds and skill levels can participate in this unique work out and Bible Study around the fire!

The Cross Roads Station Project has been moving forward! Work continued this week on some significant upgrades to the utilities and improvement of the recreational space. The floor in the multipurpose ministry area has also been improved and leveled, and the new kitchen is in progress. We can’t wait to see what God will do through these spaces! You can continue to financially support the project utilizing the green envelopes located in the pew racks in the sanctuary. Continue to pray for the Lord’s Leading in how we use this building to enhance God’s Kingdom!

Be sure to check out the Gathering Place and the bulletin boards around the church building which are being updated to include more information about things happening in our ministries and in our community. There are lots of ways you can be involved! You can always feel free to reply to this email for more information as well.

Have a great week, and see you soon!

SFCOG Updates for 7/16 and July Council Highlights

Greetings Church Family!

We continue this weekend looking at some very personal messages found in the New Testament. “Personal” usual implies something positive, but sometimes if someone gets “too personal” it can become uncomfortable… such as when we receive criticism and take it personally.

Have you ever gotten a “Strongly Worded Letter” or a nasty email from someone? How did that make you feel? Depending on the context, it may have been disturbing or unsettling.  Fortunately, I can’t say I’ve gotten very many “nasty” letters in my lifetime, but one time I was looking at an item for sale on an online yard sale listing, and I asked if they’d take less that what they had posted it for… in short, No, they were insulted that I would even ask that and they let me know how they felt!

Throughout my years of life and ministry, I’ve certainly received some messages that challenged me but were very helpful. Some words and conversations have caused me to reevaluate how I do things or caused me to be more mindful of how I lead, or treat people, or view others. God’s Word has also convicted me and changed the way I see the world around me.

How do we respond to criticism? Especially when it comes from God’s Word? When we worship together on Sunday, we will consider how we respond to the prompting of the Holy Spirit and God’s Word, but also an important issue that Paul critiques in the letter of Galatians. Galatians is a “Strongly Worded Letter” that gets to the heart of how we are to live for God—not just going through the motions, but walking by the Spirit, so that we can bear fruit as we Follow Jesus. My hope is that it will remind us to be less critically harsh with others, and more open to allowing God’s Word to critique our own lives.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”

--Galatians 5:22-23

A few updates and announcements to share with you--

  • The Youth Mission Team is having a good and productive week in Kentucky. Continue to keep them in prayer as they serve!

  • The Council of the Shippensburg First Church of God met on Tuesday this week. Several matters were discussed, including some requests to use our facilities and parking lot space, and updates about the nominating process in preparation for the annual election at our Fall Congregational meeting.

  • There are two outreach opportunities planned for the weekend of July 22 & 23. These are chances to invite your family or friends who may not be a regular part of our weekly worship. On July 22 you can spend a day at Knoebles Amusement Park with our church family, and on July 23 you could hike at Ricketts Glen State Park. More information is available in the Gathering Place.

  • We will be hosting a Seminar for all Youth, Parents, and volunteers who serve youth & children about the Biblical View of Identity. This will be Sunday, August 13 beginning at 2:00 PM in the sanctuary. There will be a similar session for youth during their Sunday School time that morning. The presenter for this event is Jomar Tussing, a teacher at Global Vision Christian School in Broadfording, MD. More information will be in church mailboxes and distributed at our Youth Sunday School class beginning this weekend.

  • On August 27th, we will include Child Dedication as part of our morning worship. If you would like to have any children from your family presented before the church as a part of this special prayer time, please contact me for more information.

My prayer is that you are as encouraged as I am by the ways that God is moving through our Church Family! I see much spiritual fruit that is being produced in your lives, and I pray that God’s Spirit will continue to guide you as you live a life of Faith, following Jesus and walking in the Spirit!

SFCOG Updates for July 9

What do you know, Shippensburg First Church of God Family?

In Classic Greek rhetorical style, Paul poses these questions in I Corinthians 1:20

“Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?”

Speaking of Philosophers and wise people, this reminds me of a headline that caught my attention recently about a decades-long wager made between two different intellectuals:  25 years ago, a bet was made between a philosopher and a scientist. According to the Journal ‘Nature,’ “back in 1998, neuroscientist Christof Koch bet philosopher David Chalmers that the mechanism by which the brain’s neurons produce consciousness would be discovered by 2023. Both scientists agreed publicly on June 23, at a gathering of scientists and philosophers in New York City, that it is still an ongoing quest — and declared Chalmers the winner.”

So the philosopher won the bet, because we still don’t understand or know completely how our human brains understand or know what they know.

We still don’t know how we know what we know.

Do you know what I mean? It’s ok if you don’t... And that’s kind of the point of Paul’s message to the Corinthian Church which we will study this weekend.

Paul was sure to emphasize that knowledge and philosophy have their place, but we must recognize their limitations and give God the ultimate place of authority in our lives and our Christian community. Turning back to Paul’s own words in I Corinthians 1:25 he says,

“For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.”

Having laid the ground work for love and humility, Paul addresses an issue the believers in the Church in Corinth were facing-- people were being divided and quarrelling over differing opinions about who they listened to or followed, or what they chose to eat or not eat, rather than being united in Christ.

What issues divide us today? Certainly, there are many… and yes, there are times and places for heart-felt conversations about differing opinions. There are times we must take a prophetic stand against issues within our culture. But we must always be more concerned with pursuing God through Christ, rather than proving ourselves right through our own knowledge.

Paul explains that sometimes we must humbly lay aside our freedoms or our pride for the greater good of loving God and loving others. There are times we may be utterly convinced that we have all the right answers about something, but first we must be sure we have a right relationship with God and with our brothers and sisters. We must be willing to admit we might be wrong about some things. Let’s also be sure that we look to Jesus and God’s Word for direction, and not be swayed by our culture or those who claim to speak for us but may have ulterior motives. Let us always strive after Jesus, who is The Way, The Truth, and The Life.

“Knowledge puffs up while love builds up. Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know. But whoever loves God is known by God.”

-I Corinthians 8:1-3

We will have a few praises and prayer requests to highlight this weekend—

  • Early Sunday morning, our Youth Missions Team will depart for Manchester, Kentucky. 11 students and 4 leaders will spend the week doing some service projects and leading a Bible School. Pray for their safety and unity as they share the love of Christ in these ways.

  • Merry Christmas in July! We have recently received a large number of Shoeboxes (102) that have been packed for the Operation Christmas Child ministry. These will be sent to different parts of the world to show the love of Christ at Christmastime.

  • We will observe the ordinances of Communion and Feetwashing on Sunday Evening at 6:30. All are welcome for this special time of worship. Pray that everyone would be blessed as we serve one another and gather at the Lord’s Table. Hope you can join us!

We hope to see you soon!
