Number our Days - SFCOG Updates for 1/4/2026

A New Year is Coming!

When time is ticking away, how do you respond?

Do you feel a sense of urgency as the year ends and there are still items left "undone" on your to-do list?

As the last few days of Christmas break roll around, do you try to squeeze in as much fun as possible?

When the clock is winding down on the scoreboard when you are watching a competition or a sports match with your favorite team or your children or grandchildren, do you find that you cheer louder in the last few seconds before the buzzer?

When we realize that time is limited, our emotions change, and our choices become increasingly important.

This Sunday we will look at Psalm 90, which states,

"Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom."

--Psalm 90:12

When we realize that time is limited, it changes the way we act and the way we live. As a new year begins, we will reflect together on the wisdom that we can gain from God's Word as it relates to the passage of time.

Let us be mindful that Eternity changes things!

Psalm 90 reminds us that the things of this earth don't last –

-Grass dries up.

-People turn back to dust.

-Even centuries pass like a single night in the view of eternity:

"A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by…"

--Psalm 90:4

Scripture tells us that only things that are established by God will last. But there is Good News and hope in this as well! This means that suffering does not last either!

When we place our hope in God, we can call to Him for deliverance:

"Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love,

that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.

Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us,

for as many years as we have seen trouble."

--Psalm 90:14-15

Psalm 90 is attributed to Moses, who witnessed as God rescued His people from captivity in Egypt. Just as God delivered His people from slavery, God can deliver us as well, and can make us glad again—In His Time.

But we may often wonder why things don't happen faster?

Consider the concept of time for a moment – Time was a creation of God! God created time in Genesis—in the beginning, God established rhythms of light & dark, day & night, and set the "great lights" in the sky to mark days and seasons.

Time shows Value – Time is the most precious currency of life. The longer something takes, the more valuable it is.

As we wait for better days ahead, we can all find satisfaction and joy and gladness when we "take our time" and devote it to God or share it with others.

This requires commitment & dedication on our part.  At this point in the year, we might call this a "resolution." Or as Psalm 90:17 puts it—

May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us—

yes, establish the work of our hands.

If we want to experience the favor of the Lord in 2026, it requires us to resolve to commit "the work of our hands" to God.

Notice this is said not just once, but twice!

Again and again let us commit our work to the Lord!

What 'work' do you do that will last?

Another way of saying this is: What are your priorities?

Let us remember that time is not just measured in "productivity" for this life, but by what will have eternal impact in the lives of others – how can we serve others, how can we love the world around us, and how do we strive for "the Favor of the Lord" each day?

A "heart of wisdom" can be found when we learn to properly "number our days" and set our priorities in accordance with the unfailing love of our God!

A Special Thank You once again to all of you who helped with the many special activities and services during the Christmas Season, and thanks to those of you who attended and participated in various ways. In case you missed them, the Cantata and the Combined Service are available online (Shippensburg First Church of God | Online Messages) along with all of our regular Sunday Morning worship services. Consider sharing them with a friend!

Thank You, Gary and Joyce!

Last Saturday we celebrated the faithful service of Pastor Gary and Joyce Hornbaker.

Thanks to everyone who attended, shared, and served to help to make the retirement party a wonderful and memorable event!

Gary and Joyce demonstrate a wonderful example of the "ministry of presence" in the manner after Christ Jesus, Emmanuel, God with Us! Praise God for their ministry and let us all join in prayer for them as they begin their new chapter of life in retirement in January.

As you or your loved ones face pastoral needs and prayer requests in the New Year, please do not hesitate to reach out to me, our new Visitation Director, Jessie Duggan, and others in our church family, so we may join you as we "Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn." Cantata Online

Merry Christmas Church,

We hope you all had a wonderful day yesterday!

Thanks to everyone who joined us for Christmas Eve and made these services possible.

The cantata is available on our website or YouTube channel if you'd like to watch or re-watch it to celebrate the Savior with song!

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."

 John 1:1-5

This Sunday     -- Last Sunday of the Year

We will have one combined service at 10:00 on December 28th (and no Sunday School). This will feature a variety of music, a children's message, and some reflections on God's Faithfulness from the longest and shortest Psalms in the Bible – Psalm 117 & 119.

Praise the Lord, all you nations;

extol him, all you peoples.

For great is his love toward us,

and the faithfulness of the Lord

endures forever.

Praise the Lord.

--Psalm 117

Have a blessed day!

The Beginning of Hope - SFCOG Update for Christmas Eve & 12/28

Christmas Eve is Coming!

Let's reflect on Beginnings & Endings…

"Once Upon a Time…"

"…They Lived Happily Ever After"

At Christmas, we celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus. We might think of that Bethlehem manger from over 2000 years ago as the beginning of the story, but actually the True Story of Jesus (the story of Christmas) started long before then!

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."

Genesis 1:1

Beginnings are important—they help to explain why we are here. The Bible tells us that God made all things, and God called it all "Good." When God made humans, we read that we are made in the "Image of God" and God calls humanity "very good"!

The story begins with the Goodness of all things!

Among the many wonderful gifts that God gave to humanity, was free will. He lovingly gave us the ability to make our own choices. But with this gift, came the risk that when presented with the choice between right and wrong, we might choose wrong. And we did. We all do.

The Bible calls this by many different names—pride, falling short, sin. And with this, has come a whole lot of brokenness in our world—many things are no longer as "Good" as God intended.

But all along, God had a plan!  The plan nears fulfillment in the New Testament with a "New Beginning."

John 1:1-5 records:

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."

Notice the words "in the beginning"

Now where have we heard that before? Sound familiar? It should!

John connects the story of Jesus to the beginning of all things, and also identifies Jesus as one-and-the-same with God the Father, Creator of all things!

Prior to the Baby in the Manger, Jesus was identified as the Word, the Logos, the Wisdom of God by which the whole world was made and illuminated.

Throughout Advent, we have studied various ways that people in the Old Testament looked forward with HOPE to the day when God himself would come and dwell with His people, saving them from sin and death and darkness.

I Peter 1:12 says "It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things."

This story of Hope extends through time and space! We might not grasp all the complexities off all of this, but Hebrews 13:8 summarizes it by saying—

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever."

That was a lot about the beginning; let's talk a bit about the ending… When we get to the end of the Bible, we find this:

Revelation 1:8  "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty."

and

Revelation 22:13 "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End."

Jesus Christ is both the first and the last, he is the alpha and the omega (A-Z) the beginning and the end. Jesus is the almighty God, who is and who was and who is to come!

Jesus was God's plan from before time began, and He is the completion of the plan—the End Result of God's Love for His whole creation. All of creation has been waiting in anticipation for what God has done through Jesus Christ.

Jesus is the Beginning and the End!    And He is also the Center as well!

Join us on Christmas Eve as we celebrate the "Long Awaited Hope" that finds fulfillment in Jesus!

Christmas Eve Services

We want to invite you to our Christmas Eve Services Tomorrow! We will have a contemporary style, family-friendly service at 6:00pm, featuring some special music from our children's ministry kids and a children's message, and our traditional Cantata at 11:00pm, entitled "Infant Holy, Infant Lowly." Both will include candle lighting.

The Cantata will also be available online at our website and our YouTube Channel.

Invite your friends and family and let's celebrate together!

As part of our worship, after both services, we will be collecting a special offering, and everything collected will be given to the Community Cares Shelter which cares for families right here in our neighborhood. Please give as you feel led.

This Sunday     -- Last Sunday of the Year

We will have one combined service at 10:00 on December 28th (and no Sunday School). This will feature a variety of music, a children's message, and some reflections on God's Faithfulness from the longest and shortest Psalms in the Bible – Psalm 117 & 119

Retirement Celebration

The Retirement Celebration for Pastor Gary is this Saturday, December 27 at 5pm. In appreciation of his years of service, we want to invite you all out for an evening of laughter & memories as we share a meal together and celebrate what God has done through the faithful service of Gary & Joyce. We are expecting a great turn out (more than we could comfortably fit in Crossroads Station), so we are partnering with our church family at Greenvillage Church of God to host the event (located right down Rt. 11 at 5164 Philadelphia Ave Chambersburg, PA 17202).

Bring some funny or thoughtful stories you'd like to share about your memories with Pastor Gary!

Instruction Manual - SFCOG Updates for 12/21

Christmas is Coming!

As you may have heard me say, our family loves Lego models!

Sometimes when our kids were younger and they were given a Lego model for a gift, the grandparents would say something like this: "when I come back again, I want to see the finished project."

There's something fascinating about the way a confusion jumble of parts can be transformed into a big and elaborate model when you follow the directions correctly!

In a similar way, I think Jesus, the giver of all good gifts, says to us: "when come back, I want to see the finished project!"

Jesus has entrusted those who believe in Him with the task of building His Kingdom by the power of His Holy Spirit. But we may quickly realize that this isn't always as simple as following a "step-by-step" instruction manual in a Lego set. Life is complicated and complex. We still face many unforeseen challenges and struggles as we await the return of Jesus.

Advent reminds us of both the first coming of our Savior, and His second coming, and it gives us the opportunity to consider Hope, even amidst the trials of life.

What challenges or decisions are you facing today? Where do you need wisdom? What confusing or surprising situations confront you as you look ahead to 2026?

In keeping with our Advent theme of Hope, we can remember that our Hope is secure because God is With Us!

And this Hope can guide us to change the world, because God is Love!

In the Christmas story, in Matthew chapter 1, Joseph was faced with his own surprising and confusing situation. Joseph appeared to be a wise and righteous man, but he was confronted with a new situation for which his own wisdom and righteousness did not adequately prepare him.

You can read his account in Matthew 1:18-23

This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."

22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 "The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" (which means "God with us").

Let's understand the complexity here—Joseph & Mary are engaged to be married, but then suddenly Mary is pregnant, and Joseph is not the baby's father (uh oh). In any relationship, that would be complicated, but in their Hebrew culture, this would have been incredibly scandalous for a variety of reasons…

Joseph didn't have a "step-by-step" instruction manual to follow for this situation. But fortunately for him, he received special instructions directly from an Angel of the Lord about what to do next.

While we may not have angelic messengers telling us what to do each day, we do have the very real presence of God With Us through His Holy Spirit, and we have the guidance of God's Word as well. The Word of God as revealed through Jesus reminds us that God's Love simplifies what the world over-complicates.

Paul, speaking by the Holy Spirit, puts it this way in Romans 13:9-10, evoking the words that Jesus quoted from Leviticus 19:18—Paul says,

'The commandments, "You shall not commit adultery," "You shall not murder," "You shall not steal," "You shall not covet," and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: "Love your neighbor as yourself." 10 Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.'

According to Paul, Love is the instruction manual!

Love is our theme for the fourth Sunday of Advent. Love simplifies what is complicated. Love fulfills the law. Love motivates us and reminds us that we have work to do, along with God's Holy Spirit. We are meant to live fearlessly for God, receiving the peace of Jesus as we learn from the Holy Spirit, remembering that "There is no fear in Love" (1 John 4:18)

Because God is Love (I John 4:8, 16), and God is With Us, we have Hope for whatever life brings our way, and we can expect Big things from our Big God! Seek Him for wisdom and direction, and let God's Love guide you!

Jessie is looking forward to getting to know our Church family at worship times, at Community Night, and at other special events. She will be available in the Church Office every Wednesday if you would like to meet with her, and will be available for home and hospital visits throughout the week as able and as needed also, serving alongside our other visitation ministry leaders and servants. You can contact Jessie at the Church office (717-532-8421) or by sending her an email at: VisitationDirector@shipfcog.org

Be sure to welcome Jessie and her husband, Frank, as you see them around!

Retirement Celebration

There will be a Retirement Celebration for Pastor Gary on Saturday, December 27 at 5pm.

If you haven't already done so, please RSVP to the church office ( secretary@shipfcog.org ) to help us with planning for the meal, and begin thinking of funny or thoughtful stories you'd like to share about your memories with Pastor Gary!

Christmas Event Recap

Last weekend we had some more wonderful opportunities to bring in the Christmas Season with our community friends and neighbors, including the Herald Brass concert and Christmas Caroling! Thanks to everyone who has planned, prepared, and participated in all of our special Christmas Events!

Christmas Eve Services

We want to invite you to our Christmas Eve Services!

Handicapped Parking Spaces & Overflow Parking

As the holidays approach, church attendance often increases, so let us be mindful of how we can be considerate and hospitable in our parking lot in the following ways:

There are several handicapped parking spaces available in our parking lot located near the handicapped entrance for those with a need and proper handicapped tags. Please refrain from using the handicapped spots along E. Martin Ave. which are intended for the congregation of the Prince Street Church.

In the event of additional parking needs, overflow parking is available at our Annex building across N Prince St. and behind Orrstown Bank, just a short walk up on E. Martin Ave. There are a few spots that have been shared with us behind Weigle & Associates Law Office down S. Gettle Ave. available for Sunday parking as well.

If you are comfortable walking a longer distance, please consider utilizing one of these overflow areas to accommodate our visiting guests and those who cannot walk as far.

Thank you!

Please pray!!!!

Dear Family,

Please be in prayer for the Arnie Fleagle’s family.  This afternoon, God called Arnie’s wife, Faye, to her eternal home.  They live in Ohio, and Arnie will be officiating the service.

Faye is Denny and Margie Fleagle’s sister-in-law.

Heaven is rejoicing, yet the loss on this earth is hard.

Thank you for partnering with us in prayer!
