Heaven Comes Near - SFCOG Updates for 11/23

Sunday is Coming! 

 

 

Next month, a “heavenly visitor” from outside our solar system will come near to earth. An interstellar comet labeled “3i/ATLAS” will be at its closest point to our planet on December 19th. It will not light up the sky like the Christmas Star followed by the Magi, but it is remarkable because it is an object from outside our solar system which is just passing through. This is only the 3rd object of its type that astronomers have observed. Don’t worry, while it will come close to our planet, there is no danger of impact (and it is not an alien spacecraft).

The physical world that God has created is a marvelous thing to study and observe, and this is a unique opportunity for scientists to study a piece of the distant “heavens” as it comes near. But even more marvelous than that, is the fact that in a spiritual sense, through Jesus, Heaven has indeed come near! We can celebrate this as we Give Thanks!

 

This weekend we will reflect on some signs that the Heavenly Kingdom of God has come near. According to Jesus, there is indeed a plentiful harvest, and the message that Jesus told his disciples to proclaim is this:

‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’

--Luke 10:9

 

But in moments of uncertainty or discouragement, we might ask, how do we know that God is at work? How can we trust that the Kingdom of Heaven is advancing, as Jesus proclaimed?

 

There are many signs—but one thing to watch for is when God’s people are obedient to Go and serve the church and the world, as workers in the Harvest Fields.

That is Exciting News:  We’ve all got a part to play in revealing the Nearness of the Kingdom of God!

 

As we read in Luke 10:2-3, He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.”

 

Look what Jesus says to his Disciples—"The harvest is plentiful…” and then he says “Go!”      

 

How do we respond to these statements?

 

This weekend we will wrap up this series in which we have made some connections between the Prophet Isaiah in the Old Testament and the Gospel of Luke in the New Testament. Here’s a quick review:

 

In Isaiah 6:8, we find the familiar passage—

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”    And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

 

Isaiah is a model of someone who eagerly and obediently desired to go to proclaim the Word of God—even though God told Isaiah that he will send him with a message that will not be properly heard or understood in his own lifetime.

 

When we fast-forward to the New Testament: In Luke 8:10, Jesus says—

“The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, “‘though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.’”

 

Jesus is quoting from Isaiah here, speaking about the fulfillment of all those ancient prophesies which looked forward to the time when people would begin to understand the Word of God more clearly (more will be said about this next month during Advent!).

 

Jesus is revealing “the knowledge of the secrets of the Kingdom of God” to those who follow him! And as we have seen, Jesus sends out all of his disciples as messengers to share these secrets “to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8).

 

The Big Picture of the New Testament reveals that You and I have a part to play in this amazing story! We are invited to Join Jesus in proclaiming the nearness of the Kingdom of God!

 

We will study Luke 10 to see how we can join Jesus in his Kingdom work, and we will celebrate some signs of this in our own church family—including some updates and highlights from our own ministries at SFCOG and an exciting announcement! We will also have the opportunity as a church family to pray over some individuals who are beginning new ministry opportunities as well.

Special Events

This Weekend, we have 2 opportunities to share our facilities:

  • Saturday (11/22) we will be hosting the Fall Concert for the Shippensburg University Choir & Madrigal Singers. This is a special way that we can serve our community and show some Christian love and hospitality to these college students and their families. It’s always a great night of music as well, so consider attending! The Concert begins at 7:30, doors open at 7:00.

 

  • Sunday (11/23) afternoon at 2:00 we have the opportunity to host a Bible Quiz meet. Our Little League, Middle School, and High School Quiz Teams will be competing against teams from other churches to show their Bible Knowledge. Everyone is welcome to come support our children & youth and learn more about the quizzing ministry!

 

 

Prayer Updates

  • Continue to keep Glenda Bistline in your prayers. Her hip replacement surgery has been rescheduled for January 22.
  • Please keep Wade Mills (Juanita Mills' grandson and Tawnie Wingert Mills' son) in your prayers. His appendix ruptured and they have him on antibiotics to get the infection cleared up enough to operate.

 

 

Retirement Celebration

There will be a Retirement Celebration for Pastor Gary on Saturday, December 27 at 5pm. In appreciation of his years of service, we want to invite you all out for an evening of laughter & memories as we share a meal together and celebrate what God has done through the faithful service of Gary & Joyce. We are expecting a great turn out (more than we could comfortably fit in Crossroads), so we are partnering with our church family at Greenvillage Church of God to host the event (located right down Rt. 11 at 5164 Philadelphia Ave Chambersburg, PA 17202).

 

You will find sign-up sheets around the building, so please RSVP to help us with planning for the meal, and begin thinking of funny or thoughtful stories you’d like to share about your memories with Pastor Gary!

Stop by our bethel for some Christmas music and visit with our neighbors, or make your way to some other nearby church buildings to take a peek at the beautiful architecture and learn a bit of Shippensburg History. SFCOG Prayer Updates & Kinetics Announcement

Hello Church Family,

 

I have two matters of prayer for our Church Family to share with you today:

 

  • Please keep Jonathan Scott and his family in prayer today. His grandfather passed away last week and the celebration of life service is being held today.

 

  • Remember Frank Killian in prayer as he had a procedure today to prepare him for dialysis.

 

Also keep the Operation Christmas Child shoebox ministry in your prayers as the Annex serves as a drop off center this week for other churches in the area.

 

On that note, please be aware that our “Kinetics” adult Bible study will be meeting in the Sanctuary tomorrow night, since shoebox collection will be in the Annex where they usually meet.

 

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you.

In the midst of our sorrow and loss, we are thankful for Nancy Mellott as this morning she met her Lord and Savior face-to-face!  She is free of all limitations and is enjoying all that He has prepared for her.

 

We grieve and pray for comfort for the family as they navigate through their loss.

Dear Family

 

Jennifer Shumway would like prayer for Ellen's (Ellen was the nurse that Jennifer recruited to be one of my home nurse's while I was recovering) granddaughter, Maddie.  She is a teenager.  She was lethargic, taken to hospital for tests.  She had a seizure and was life-lined to Hershey.  Her Co2 levels are high. Thank you!🙏🙏 

 

Deb Weaver is asking for prayer her mom.   Last Friday she was having heart problems.  On Monday, they installed a pacemaker.  On Tuesday she came home.  Wednesday morning, she had a major stroke.  They flew her to York.  They're bringing her back to Chambersburg Hospital this evening.  The family has some tough decisions to make.  She is 95 years old and ready to go.

Finn Naugle, Randy and Deb Dyarman’s great-grandson,  was diagnosed with pneumonia.  We are praising the Lord, that he was able to come home from the hospital yesterday.

 

Kerri Weber texted the following concerning Rob who is in York Hospital, “The doctor changed the valve in Rob’s shunt as everything else looked ok.  We'll spend a night in NSICU and hopefully home tomorrow.”

Empty Handed - SFCOG Updates for 11/9

Sunday is Coming! 

 

 

Have you ever been sent out to do a job that you felt under-equipped to do?

 

When I was a student in seminary in Findlay, Ohio, I got a part-time job working in the dietary department of a retirement facility. I thought I'd be mainly washing dishes, wiping tables, and chatting with residents.

 

…But since I had previous kitchen experience (at Burger King), the management thought I would be a good candidate to fill in as a line cook for one wing of the facility when the other cooks were not available. Fast Food didn't prepare me for that!

 

Fortunately, most things were pretty straight forward, but it was quite a lot to figure out on my own when it came to cooking and timing everything, and managing special orders that occasionally came through.

 

I was willing, but I was under-trained and under-equipped, so I didn't last long in that role.

 

This weekend we will see that God has a job for us, but He equips His people in powerful ways—although differently than the ways of the world.

 

In life, there are many times when we feel overwhelmed and underprepared – especially as we consider the big events of the world, and also the challenges of our everyday lives. There are so many issues that could overwhelm us if we let them, especially when we realize our own limitations. There are so many people that have needs, and we might feel like we have very little to offer them.

 

The Disciples of Jesus had moments like this also. Recall that we have been observing the themes of confusion & seeking understanding in Luke 8.

In that chapter, Jesus tells the parable of the 4 soils and says that some hearts will receive the Word of God, some won't—some people 'get it' but some don't.
Then Jesus goes out like the farmer in the parable to generously and abundantly share the Word of God, as He meets a variety of needs in a variety of ways.

 

In the middle of all this, even after Jesus calms a storm and after working many other miracles in their sight, the disciples themselves still have moments of confusion—they ask "who is this?" (Luke 8:25). They still don't get it…

 

Yet even in their confusion, even before they fully understand who Jesus is and grasp the actual plan of their Messiah, after a whirlwind of miracles, seemingly without any time to debrief, Jesus sends them out on a mission in the very next chapter—

 

When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, 2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. 3 He told them: "Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt. 4 Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. 5 If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them." 6 So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere.

We can't be sure, but we don't get a lot of indication that very much time had passed since the disciples had fearfully asked the question "who is this?" –but still they were sent out to proclaim the good news and heal people.

 

And not only does Jesus send them out without complete understanding, He also sends them out empty handed!

In Verse 3, Jesus says "Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt."

 

"Empty handed."

 

How were they supposed to preach without any training or experience in public speaking?

How were they supposed to heal people without any doctoral degrees, without any medicine? Not even a first-aid kit?

 

When have you felt like that?

 

Life is full of surprises! Try as we might with our own wisdom and strength, we may never be prepared for everything…

 

Now let me show you something: I've read this passage several times and my eyes often focus on what the disciples lacked—no staff, bag, bread, money, shirt, etc.

But I realized Monday while preparing for this week that I had been skipping right over what Jesus did give them in verse 1:

 

Jesus gave them "power and authority!"

The Greek Words are dynamin and exousian

  • dynamin also means "force" – especially miraculous power (and is sometimes used figuratively to talk about abundance).
  • exousian carries the concepts of privilege, capacity, competency, & freedom; it implies mastery & delegated influence.

That's not nothing! That's some powerful 'something'!

 

Jesus delegated to these 12 disciples His own power & authority, and sure enough, they went out and did exactly what He told them to – they proclaimed Good News & Healed people! They succeed! And so do 72 others in Chapter 10 after the first 12 went out and came back.

 

Luke says they all returned with Joy! And upon seeing their excitement, Jesus prays this beautiful prayer in Luke 10:21

At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do."

 

Success in God's Kingdom is not about worldly wisdom or strength, but about the 'secrets of the kingdom' that Jesus reveals!

 

If we skip ahead to Luke's Second Book, in Acts 1:8, Jesus expands this commissioning even further as He prepares to return to heaven —

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

 

Again and again, this same power and authority is expanded and passed on to hundreds & thousands of people in the book of Acts, and then onward and outward throughout History.

 

Paul says in many places in the New Testament that the Power of God's Holy Spirit is available to all who believe in Jesus:

And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.

--Romans 8:11

 

Today, let's not focus on what we lack, but let's remember what we have—we also have power and authority from Jesus Himself, through His Holy Spirit within us!

 

With God, we are not empty handed!

 

We will explore this further on Sunday, as we also hear a 1-year recap from our Woman's Alliance ministry and consider ways that God can do "immeasurably more" than we could ever expect, if we are willing to join Isaiah (and the disciples) and say, "Here am I. Send me" (Isaiah 6:8)

Operation Christmas Child

Our "Operation Christmas Child" goal for 2025 is 650 shoeboxes!

 

On November 16th We will have a special prayer of dedication for all of the shoeboxes we collect. You have until then to bring in a shoebox, or you can also make a donation towards our Compelled To Serve committee, and our Children's Ministry kids will pack a box for you at the Shoebox Supply House. This is a great way that we can work together as a church family to send the Gospel around the world.

SFCOG Prayer Updates

Hello Church Family,

 

Thank you all for your prayers on behalf of my mother, Glenda. She had a heart catheterization today and the doctor did not find any blockages, so they can proceed with rescheduling her hip-replacement surgery. We are praising the Lord and trusting in His plans going forward.

 

Additionally, John Breneman’s pacemaker procedure went well yesterday, and he is home recovering. He is scheduled for a CT Scan on Friday.

 

Rob Weber’s procedure today determined that his shunt is working, but he is going to have some additional procedures and assessments to determine options for adjustment.

 

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

Dear Family,

 

Please pray for healing and a strong recovery for Lisa Dubbs’, sister, Kathy Jones, who had a medical emergency last evening.  She is in the ICU in critical condition.

 

Praise God for bringing Carol Schue through surgery.  The plan is for her to be released around 3:00 this afternoon.

 

"And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:19

Dear Family,

 

Please pray for Randy and Deb Dyarman’s great grandson, Finn Naugle.  He will be 2 on Nov. 30th.  Finn was born with CHD (Congenital Heart Defect) and without  a spleen.  He went to the Chambersburg Hospital last night, and they. are going to transfer him to CHOP in Philadelphia today by ambulance.  He is fighting some kind of infection.  Please pray for wisdom for the doctors to treat this infection.  Without the spleen he has no immune system.

Glenda Bistline is scheduled for a heart catheterization on Wednesday.

John Breneman is scheduled to have a pacemaker inserted tomorrow.

Susan Lato’s mother is in the Hagerstown Hospital and is dealing with health challenges.

Shirley Negley is now at Menno Haven Rehabilitation Center.

Carol Schue is scheduled for surgery tomorrow morning.
