Good Shepherd - SFCOG Updates for 9/21

Sunday is Coming!

Let me introduce you to our dog, Rosie:

Rosie is part Sheep Dog (Border Collie-Poodle mix, we think). She is very good at keeping watch over our "Bistline Flock." Whenever anyone goes by our house (especially other dogs), she sounds the alarm! Sometimes her loud barking is too much, too loud, and too early in the morning, but she is well-meaning, and it's reassuring to know she's keeping an eye on things.

Rosie has not had formal sheep dog training, so her instincts sometimes cause her to get into mischief… Her keen nose sometimes causes her to occasionally steal food off the counter, her watchful eye views our housecats as "outside threats," and her "herding" instinct causes her to try to redirect our other dog, Mikko, by pulling on his collar or leash when he stubbornly doesn't want her help. You could say she qualifies as an "ok shepherd" or maybe a "moderate shepherd" or even a "satisfactory shepherd." But this weekend, we will consider the "Good Shepherd" – Jesus!

We will study the gift of shepherding on Sunday as we continue our study of Spiritual Gifts using the words of Paul in Ephesians 4:11-12 as our framework—

"So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up."

Wait, 'shepherds' isn't on the list?

The fourth item in that list is a word that the NIV translates this as "pastors" but the Greek word more accurately refers to those who are entrusted to care for and lead a flock – Shepherds.

We've previously said that Shepherds are Caregivers, Harmonizers, Watchmen – the ones who guide and provide.

As with all the titles or roles in this list, I want us to consider Jesus as our model, and prayerfully think about how we can ALL serve in these roles in our own unique ways. Some things might come more naturally to us in certain ways, but I want to suggest to us that we all have a "flock" to care for and guide, if we are willing to submit ourselves to the leading of Jesus, our "Good Shepherd."

Also, we will see that we all have a part to play in keeping our flock unified as we follow Jesus, the Good Shepherd, who is the primary voice we should listen to in a world full of noise.

Jesus says in John 10:10

"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."

Jesus wants to lead us to the fullness of life, like a Good Shepherd who guides his flock into the pen and out into the pasture in proper times (we looked at this passage back during the season of Lent). Recall that Jesus began this passage by rebuking the Pharisees as thieves and robbers who have entered the sheep fold by climbing over the wall. The Pharisees considered themselves powerful "gatekeepers" for the people of God, but Jesus critiques them for leading the flock astray.

Jesus goes on to reveal that he is the Good Shepherd, who knows his Sheep by name and leads His flock along the right paths at the right time—and furthermore, Jesus is willing to do anything for his sheep—even die for them.

"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13 The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.

14 "I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. 17 The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father."

John 10:11-18

A little historical context here: "Shepherd" has often been a figurative term applied to kings and rulers. In the days of the Bible, people with political authority and power were seen as shepherds who were meant to lead the flock of humanity. It was often an inherently "political" term, so consider this your 'heads-up' that we will touch on politics here…

In John 10, Jesus is making a bold claim that He alone is the Shepherd that is worth following. He is speaking as the "Great I AM" and declaring that the powers and authorities of the world usually do not have our best interest in mind. If we want to experience the "fullness of life" we can only find it by following His Voice.

This is still True today! In contrast to the powers of this world who so often seem to see people as just a social-security number on a list, faceless voters in a ballot box, or donors in a database, the Good Shepherd knows His sheep personally. He knows our needs, and guides us to where we need to be. He protects us, even to the point of sacrificing Himself for our eternal safety, knowing that He has the full power and authority to lay down his life and take it back up again.

Let me remind us that now and always, we need to listen carefully to the voice of our Shepherd Jesus, because he cares for us best (see also Psalm 23).

As a "pastor/shepherd" of the Shippensburg First Church of God flock, I want to always point you to Jesus, and warn us that in these divisive times, there are many voices in the world that could lead us astray, and many who try to silence voices that need to be heard, and even some who might benefit or profit themselves by driving people apart.

In a world of conflicting ideologies and a lack of commitment to the truth, we need a Shepherd to guide us. In the wake of tragedies, such as the assassination of Charlie Kirk and other recent violent and heartbreaking events that fill our minds and media screens, we need a Good Shepherd to comfort us and protect us. In times of finger pointing, fearmongering, and prideful attention seeking, we need a Shepherd that leads us on "the right paths for his namesake" (Psalm 23).

The Good Shepherd and His Word commands us to "love our enemies" (Matthew 5, Luke 6), and also reminds us that "our struggle is not against flesh and blood" (Ephesians 6:12). The Good Shepherd reveals that there are many lost sheep that are worthy of our time and love and attention, because they were clearly worthy of His. The Good Shepherd declares that we must never allow fear or anger to cause us to hate our fellow brothers and sisters who are made in the image of God, because our love is how we show ourselves to be His disciples—His flock.

No matter how angry or confused or scared we might feel sometimes, there are no exceptional circumstances that would permit us not to follow the words of Jesus found in Scripture. In every age of the Church—even through times of war and persecution, through every valley of the shadow of death—the Shepherd has led his flock onward toward the eternal house of the Lord! Even in the most challenging times, followers of the Good Shepherd must trust in Him—His Leading, His Strength, His Wisdom, His Grace & Mercy, and His Sacrificial, Powerful Love.

And we must also follow His example. Remember, we have a Good Shepherd who loves us, and who also loves the other sheep who are "outside the pen."

"I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd."

John 10:16

Christ "Equips Us" to join him in shepherding all sorts of sheep into the pen of safety and the pastures of provision.

Who has God entrusted to you? Who is your flock? Maybe it is your own children, or your parents or grandparents. Maybe it is your teammates or the people at your school. Perhaps the people you work with, or your neighbors. Maybe Jesus wants to send you to bring in a wandering sheep who has gone astray?

Together, let us follow the Good Shepherd, as one flock!

Pastors Report for August 2025

Hello fellow servants,

As Fall begins, so begins a new season of ministry, marked by the return of Community Night and other upcoming community activities. We had a good turnout for all ages last night, and wonderful teams of servants who lead in each area. The fields are ripe for harvest, and God is sending workers! Yet the needs remain, and with the announcement of Pastor Gary’s retirement and the potential of hiring new staff, much on the road ahead remains unknown—but we trust that our God goes before us!

God has often reminded me that challenging and uncertain times when we feel weak or inadequate are exactly when He is most powerfully at work—

“My power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Cor 12:9).

I continue to pray that we all would grow to reflect the Character of God as demonstrated throughout Scripture and most clearly seen in Jesus, in times of success and celebration, and in the face of challenges, hardships, and uncertainties. Be reminded that through Christ, everyone has a part to play in “building up” God’s House!

Thank you all for the important parts you play, and the humble yet devoted ways you all carry out the work of God’s Ministry here at Shippensburg First Church of God!

Church Picnic! Playing outside with the Prophets -- SFCOG Updates for 9/7

The Church Picnic is Coming!

This weekend we get to “go outside and play” as we celebrate together in the beauty of the great outdoors!

Speaking of playing outside, I can remember as a kid, one of my favorite things to do was build forts outside. Have you ever done that? Have you ever spent an afternoon finding a perfect tree and stacking sticks and logs against it? Then you cover it with leaves, and maybe find a nice bit of moss for a “door mat” and interesting rocks to decorate it. My children also enjoy playing outside in their tree house, and making other cozy hideouts in the backyard.

This seems fitting, as we have been talking about “Building the House of God.” It is also fitting that we take a little time together out in the wilderness to worship God in the Temple of His Creation, as we began this series with the reminder that “the Most High does not live in houses made by human hands. As the prophet (Isaiah) says: ‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me? says the Lord. Or where will my resting place be? Has not my hand made all these things?’”

Acts 7:48-50

In addition to the majesty of Creation in the wilderness, the pages of Scripture reveal that we who identify ourselves as the people of God are also being built up together as God’s Temple!  Ephesians 4 reminds us that Christ Himself is uniquely gifting us and putting us together, piece by piece to build up His House, His Church, His Temple—

“So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”

Ephesians 4:11-13

As we look to Scripture this weekend, we will continue exploring these 5 roles that Paul lists in Ephesians 4:11Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Shepherds, & Teachers—to see how Christ has uniquely gifted each one of us to serve in various ways.

We will ask, what is a Prophet?

Can you see yourself as a prophet?

It is also fitting that we will find ourselves outdoors as we consider the Prophets, because one of the New Testament Examples we will look to is John the Baptist, who we may recall is “The voice of one calling in the wilderness.”

Luke 3:2-6 tells us about John:

“The word of God came to John, son of Zechariah, in the wilderness. He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:

‘A voice of one calling in the wilderness, “Prepare the way for the Lord,

‘make straight paths for him.

‘Every valley shall be filled in,

‘every mountain and hill made low.

‘The crooked roads shall become straight,

‘the rough ways smooth.

‘And all people will see God’s salvation’”

Luke explains that John the Baptist came as a prophet to fulfill the words of a previous prophet, Isaiah, in preparation for the Lord’s Coming which would happen in a whole new way.

Prophets do many different things, but many of the functions of a prophet are mentioned in Luke 3:4-6.

A Prophet is--

o            A voice calling in the wilderness—one who speaks, often outside the mainstream, lending their voice to God & others.

o            One who prepares the way for the Lord to come –announces God’s actions among us.

o            One who makes the way accessible for others—removes barriers.

o            One who brings down the high, and lifts up the low—rebukes the proud and encourages the humble.

o            One who straightens what is crooked and smooths out what is rough—simplifies the complications of legalism, injustice, etc.

o            One who reveals to others the Salvation of God—identifies the works of God (points out the Messiah)

God Himself does all of these things through His Prophets in the Old Testament, and God worked to do this in a special way through John the Baptist, to prepare the way for Jesus.

Ultimately, Jesus himself, during His incarnate earthly ministry, became the most complete model of a Prophet, and set an example for his disciples to follow:

o            Jesus often spent time in the wilderness in prayer.

o            Jesus announced the arrival of the Kingdom of Heaven—His message: “Repent, the kingdom of heaven is near”

o            Jesus removed barriers by healing the sick, casing out demons, overturning the tables of moneychangers, etc.

o            Jesus challenged and rebuked the proud leaders who were in places of authority (“woe to you, teachers of law” etc.)

o            Jesus encouraged and lifted up the humble, the children, the women, the sick, the outcasts, etc.

o            Jesus smoothed out the complexities that had been added to the law, simplifying it to say Love God & Love others, etc.

o            Jesus Himself revealed the way to God’s Salvation, because He IS the WAY of salvation.

We can all follow the example of Jesus, our Lord and Savior, and join in proclaiming His Way to others!

This can take so many different forms, and can include lots of soul-searching creativity, as demonstrated by many biblical examples:

Sometimes it means getting away from the hustle & bustle of life, as John the Baptist and many other OT prophets did, pondering God in the wilderness, and then sharing your thoughts with others.

Sometimes it means marching the whole way across a city proclaiming a message from God, even if you don’t want to, as Jonah did (and then maybe “building a fort” outside the city to see what God will do next).

Sometimes it means writing letters to people in positions of authority and engaging in political activism, like Amos.

Sometimes this means marching right into the center of town and making a scene, Like Jeremiah,

Sometimes it means lamenting the brokenness of the world in song, as Jeremiah also did.

Always it involves creativity—prophets are storytellers, poets, songwriters, artists, etc.

How about you?

How has Christ uniquely gifted you to prophetically proclaim the word of the Lord in your own way? Join us this Sunday at the Picnic in the Park—out in the “wilderness”—as we ponder this together!

Getting the right pieces in place - SFCOG Updates for 8/31

Sunday is Coming!

Greetings! If you happen to be reading this email on a smart phone, the device in your hands contains hundreds of unique parts that make the screen viewable, that connects the cellular signal to the worldwide web to retrieve and decode the message, and it all fits together in a protective outer shell that houses these inner workings (including circuits, processors, storage memory, sensors, battery, and more) and still fits comfortably in your hand.

All of these parts are different, but they all work together towards one common purpose. If the pieces weren't put together in the right places, the message wouldn't get across.

This week we will continue studying how every believer works together to "build the church." We will further study Ephesians 4 to learn about 5 types of people that Christ equips to carry out His Kingdom Mission as they build His Heavenly Temple on Earth—and realize we all have a part to play!

"So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ."

–Epheisians 4:11-13

This weekend we focus on the role of Apostles. Thinking and serving like an apostle is a revolutionary way to live, and it has applications for each of us in our daily lives. But what is an apostle?

Apostles – Pioneers, Visionaries, Entrepreneurs – the ones who get things started

When we summarize this to say "the ones who get things started," what we really mean is joining God in the work He is already doing, by humbly helping to get the right pieces in the right places, so that the message of the Gospel can be received.

"Apostle" is not a title we use in our modern world very much. It is a very unique sort of servant-leadership role. Historically, before Christ & His Church, this title could be used of someone who was delegated as an official messenger for a ruler, similar to an ambassador—Someone who would go ahead to prepare the way for a King!

In the Gospels, Jesus designates His Twelve Disciples to be His first Apostles—and then He sends them out to be His representatives. As the Church grew and expanded, "Apostle" became a formal title given to the disciples, and while the term does carry special meaning for the twelve and others who knew Jesus personally, it also came to have broader application. This can be seen in various places in the New Testament, where it became used more generally to speak of people who were church planters and community organizers and network builders, who labored to bring others together to advance the Gospel.

Paul is probably the most well-known person who is identified as an Apostle, but the term was applied to others who would take on this role of servant-leadership, especially in terms of expanding the Christian Community and Mission. In the early Church, Apostles were the sorts of people who would go into a community to plant the seeds of the Gospel, and then find and appoint people who could carry on the work of ministry.

Apostles got things going, but would often hand it off to others to carry it forward, while checking in on them from time to time, as we saw with Paul & Titus earlier this month. Even Paul himself acknowledged other prominent apostles who went before him, like a woman named Junia in Romans 16:7, as we will also see on Sunday.

If there is a top to the "chain of command" in these Spiritual Gifting roles, it would be the Apostles, but we must remember that power and authority looks different in the Kingdom of God, according to Jesus—

"Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.

Matthew 20:26

Essentially Apostles must be the servants of the servants.

We've seen when Paul and the other Apostles introduce themselves in letters in the New Testament, it is often with an added title of "Servant of God." Even here in Ephesians, Paul makes his appeal to unity "As a prisoner for the Lord…" Ephesians 4:1

As with all of these spiritual gifts, the Bible presents Jesus as the Ultimate Model of an Apostle.

The writer of Hebrews says in Hebrews 3:1

"Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest."

This passage goes on to explain how Christ's "apostolate" or "apostleship" was demonstrated through His faithfulness to God, setting an example for all believers to follow through faithful service, which ultimately lead to His own glorification.

Paul tells us that Jesus, in the fullness of God, represented our Heavenly Father as a divine ambassador who pioneered the way for salvation, speaking of Jesus using apostolic language in Colossians 1: 15-20

The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

Notice that Jesus 'represents' God as His image or ambassador, He is "firstborn" among the dead—the one who goes before others to establish peace through submission (even unto death). This is at the heart of what it means to be an Apostle.

Notice also that Jesus is the one who holds everything together, putting the right pieces (the right people) in the right places, sending other people out as His Church to live as peacemakers, reconcilers, and apostolic ambassadors who serve as Christ has served all.

Have you found your place to serve in God's House?

Our Lord personally calls and equips each believer "for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up."

Let us all strive to serve others as we serve the Lord together!
